The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has completed arrangements to kick start the NEDC Scholarship Program 2022, Teachers Training Programs and other infrastructure development programs as part of its Seven Points agenda for the educational development of the North East region of Nigeria.
The Northeast of Nigeria comprise of six States that makes up the Northeast region. These include Borno State, Yobe State, Adamawa State, Taraba State, Jigawa State and Bauchi State.
The Federal Commissioner representing the North East and Chairman North East Development Commission’s Education Endowment Fund, Mr. David Kante made the call while speaking to Radio Nigeria on the activities the Education Endowment Fund of the Commission.
The Commissioner noted that the Education Endowment Fund is created to resuscitate the regions devastated education sector and rebuild human capital.
“Education has been the bane of the crises in the Northeast because “Boko Harram” means Western Education is a Taboo …therefore the commission felt it necessary to establish a fund to intervene in education activities and other operations in the Northeast, which would allow people to contribute to the advancement of education in the region.”
Activities of the Northeast Education Endowment Fund
The Education Endowment Fund was inaugurated about a year ago and have initiated programs that are currently about to take off. The Commission have a four year tenure to implement the seven agenda programs of the Endowment Fund out of which the following three have been rolled out:
- NEDC Scholarship Program
- Teachers Training Program
- School Infrastructure Improvement Program
NEDC Scholarship Program
The Fund is currently enrolling from the six states of the Northeast with a target of about three thousand student beneficiaries for the first year for both Local and International Scholarships.
Very soon the Endowment Fund will commence the award of Scholarships to deserving candidates across the North East zone for the 2021/2022 academic session.
School Infrastructure Improvement Program
The School Infrastructure Improvement Program is aimed at getting many of the schools in the region upgraded. This will include at least one school per each of the 112 Local Governments in the Northeast
Teachers Training Program
The Teachers Training Program was put together to improve on the quality of teachers in the 18 Senatorial Districts of the Northeast of Nigeria.
In addition to these three points of focus, the Education Endowment Fund is also working to ensure that the schools are secured through proper perimeter fencing of all schools.
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) is also intervening in housing through the construction of housing units, out of which one thousand housing units were, last week, handed over to the Borno State Government for onward transmission to the affected Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who are currently returning to their various localities.
The Commissioner disclosed that these first three programs especially the NEDC Scholarship will kick start very soon as the funds for the programs have been received.
