Schools and Students can now apply for the United Bank for Africa, UBA Foundation National Essay Competition 2022 for senior secondary students in Nigeria.
The UBA National Essay Competition, NEC is an annual competition targeted at senior secondary students in Nigeria.
This is part of UBA Foundation’s educational initiative aimed at promoting the reading culture and encourage healthy and intellectual competition amongst secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.
UBA Essay Competition Topic
The Topic of the UBA Essay competition for Secondary Schools is:
“ASUU Strikes have often cost Nigerian students time. Advise the Nigerian government on how they can reach an agreement with ASUU to improve tertiary education in the country.”

Selection Criteria and Eligibility
- Student Must be in Senior Secondary school
- Student Must submit a handwritten essay (750 words MAX)
- Student Must submit a passport photograph
- Student Must submit a scanned copy of a means of identification (birth certificate, National ID, or passport)
UBA Essay Competition Awards
1st Prize: N5 million educational grant to any African University of their choice.
1st Runner-up: N3 million educational grants to any African University.
2nd runner-up: N2.5 million educational grants to any African University.
Selection Procedure
Entries received for the competition will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges made up of professors from reputable Nigerian Universities, who will then shortlist 12 essays for further assessment.
Following this, a second round of competition will involve the 12 finalists who will write a second supervised essay from which three best essays will be selected as the overall winners from the 12 finalists emerged from the first round of the competition
Application Deadline/Closing Date
Application for UBA NEC 2022 opens on Wednesday, 7th September 2022, and closes Friday, 14th October 2022.

- Applicants are required to submit their valid contact information (Name, Age, School, Address of school, Telephone Number, Residential Address, and Email Address).
- Applicants must upload a scanned copy of their original birth certificates or international passport data page.
Applicants must upload a handwritten essay on the portal.
