The number of Universities in Lagos state has increased from Nine (9) to Eleven (11) Universities following the National Universities Commission (NUC)’s approval for additional two (2) new universities for the State.
NUC had presented operational licenses to the Lagos State Government for the commencement of two new Universities namely Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST).
The Lagos State University of Science and Technology is an upgrade of existing Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) while the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Ijanikin, and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED), Epe, were both upgraded to Lagos State University of Education (LASUED).
With this development the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) will have its campuses at Ijanikin and Epe while the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST) will have its campuses at Ikorodu, Isolo and Surulere.
While presenting the operational licenses to the Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the NUC Headquarters in Abuja yesterday, the Executive Secretary of NUC Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed said the number of Universities in the country could not meet the demand for higher education in the country.
The NUC Boss said it has notified the appropriate educational agencies of government including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) among others, of the additional two universities in Lagos State.
Governor Sanwo-Olu in appreciation, said the new Universities will provide massive opportunities for individuals seeking University Education. This means that fresh students can now apply for admission through JAMB UTME/DE and may resume into the university for the 2022/2023 academic session.
The Approval also marks the end of admission of candidates into the hitherto existing National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND) and the National Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes offered by LASPOTECH, AOCOED and MOCPED.
