NUC Approves Upgrade of Shehu Shagari College of Education to University of Education, Sokoto

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the upgrade of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto to University of Education, Sokoto.

This was made known to the public in Abuja when the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Adamu Rasheed presented the certificate of recognition to the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal on Monday 21st March 2022.

The Shehu Shagari College of Education was a state government owned higher education institution located in Sokoto, Sokoto State, Nigeria. The college run  some degree programmes in affiliation to Ahmadu Bello University and Usmanu Danfodiyo University. the College offers courses in ‘Agricultural Science Education, Business Education Studies, Home Economics etc.

Presenting the certificate of recognition to Governor Aminu Tambuwal, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Adamu Rasheed, said the Shehu Shagari University also becomes the first university of education in northern Nigeria & 4th of its kind in the country.

Governor Tambuwal in his response said the university is a specialised one and will focus on entrepreneurship and functional and effective education.

He said: “The university will produce graduates that will be self-reliant and create employment to help in empowerment and human capital development of the people of Sokoto State.”

He added that the university already passed recommendations of upgrade before the Sokoto State House of Assembly, adding that the state had complied with all necessary documentation.

The governor, however, said he will not relent in his efforts at providing the necessary financial assistance required for the growth of the university.

The University of Education, Sokoto makes it the 58th State university and 206th university in Nigeria.
